Plant them during March/April in a warm, sunny location with free-draining soil which is fertile, raised beds work well. Before planting them in the ground, dig in some organic matter such as well-rotted manure or garden compost as this improves the soil structure and gives them a good feed.

When your crops are ready for harvesting, their leaves will start to wither and turn yellow and this is a sign that they have finished swelling.  This usually happens in mid to late summer depending on the variety, planting time and weather conditions.

Plant each shallot with the pointy end up about 2cm deep and 15-20cm apart and 30cm between rows to allow them space for when they produce a cluster of bulbs.
